"It's been 11 years since establishing ‘Bob's Squad'. I am very proud of every Bob's Squad member who has joined us in donating blood in support of the American Red Cross' efforts. The 2008 Biomedical Achievement Award that was presented to me by the American Red Cross is really a reflection of the endless commitment by all the members of Bob's Squad. I'm proud of them and our dedicated Bob's Discount Furniture team who have supported every blood drive year after year," said Bob Kaufman, president, Bob's Discount Furniture. In December 2007, Kaufman congratulated the 20,000th donor to join "Bob's Squad." In 2005, Kaufman donated $175,000 to the American Red Cross for the purchase of a new Self Contained Mobile Unit (blood mobile). This year, Kaufman arranged to have the New England Patriots join him in hosting a blood drive at Gillette Stadium that included participation from past and present players, Patriots Cheerleaders and community leaders. Although this was a first time event at Gillette Stadium, Kaufman and the New England Patriots blood drive collected over 500 units. Roughly 2,000 units were collected by the American Red Cross at Bob's Discount Furniture locations in 2007. "Bob is truly a great friend and supporter of the American Red Cross for many years. His tireless support and personal commitment to our blood drive goals is indicative of his selflessness and generosity. Without a doubt, the Connecticut Blood Services Region, the Northeast Division and the American Red Cross owe a great debt of gratitude to Bob Kaufman and his commitment to this life saving mission," said ARC Connecticut Blood Services Region CEO Paul Sullivan. "Bob's efforts have increased collections and reinforced the Red Cross brand by promoting the blood drives he sponsors." The goal of the American Red Cross, Connecticut Blood Services Region is to partner with the community to provide a safe and sufficient blood supply for patients at the state's 30 transfusing hospitals and acute care facilities. The Red Cross relies entirely on volunteer blood donors to meet the transfusion needs across Connecticut and needs to collect at least 650 units of whole blood each day to meet patient demand in the state.
